If your dog's coat looks dull, sheds excessively, or feels rough — and there's no flea or food allergy at play — omega-3 deficiency is the most common cause. It's also one of the easiest to fix, if you understand what you're actually buying.
Why omega-3 matters
Dogs need both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids from food. Modern dog kibble is heavily skewed toward omega-6 (cheaper to produce). That imbalance drives systemic inflammation, which shows up first in the skin and coat — the tissue with the fastest cell turnover.
The two omega-3 fatty acids that matter most are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Both come from marine sources — fish, krill, algae. Flaxseed oil contains a different omega-3 (ALA) that dogs convert poorly to EPA/DHA, which is why "omega-3 from flax" on a label is mostly marketing.
The dose that actually does something
For general skin and coat support: 50–75 mg combined EPA + DHA per 10 lbs of body weight per day. For a dog with visible skin or joint issues, double that.
A 50 lb dog with a dull coat needs about 500–750 mg EPA + DHA daily. Most pet-store "fish oil" chews provide 100–200 mg per chew, which is why owners don't see results even after months of use.
Read the label carefully
"Fish oil 1,000 mg" on the front of a bottle doesn't tell you anything. What matters is the EPA and DHA breakdown, usually buried in the supplement facts panel. Look for:
- EPA + DHA combined stated in milligrams — not just "omega-3 fatty acids."
- Source — wild-caught anchovy and sardine are cleanest. Salmon oil is fine but pricier. Pollock or generic "fish" is usually a lower-grade byproduct.
- Heavy metal testing — fish concentrate mercury, lead, and PCBs from the ocean. Third-party tested batches are non-negotiable.
- Oxidation — fish oil goes rancid fast. Look for a "manufactured" or "best by" date and storage in opaque containers.
What omega-3 does beyond skin
While the visible win is the coat, EPA and DHA work everywhere:
- Joint inflammation — omega-3 is the second most-researched joint support ingredient after glucosamine
- Brain and cognitive support — especially DHA for senior dogs and puppies
- Cardiovascular health — lowers triglycerides, improves circulation
- Immune modulation — reduces over-reactivity in dogs with environmental allergies
How long until you see the difference
Skin softens in 2–3 weeks. Shedding reduces noticeably in 4–6 weeks. Full coat transformation — the shiny, dense, healthy look — is typically 8–12 weeks because hair follicles cycle slowly.
One tell that it's working faster than the visible change: your dog's coat starts smelling neutral instead of "doggy." That smell is often inflamed sebaceous oils, and it's one of the first things to shift.
Where PawVolt fits
We do not make a skin and coat formula, and there is no subscription. PawVolt makes one product — Hip & Joint — pre-order, ships November 2026.
Worth saying plainly if you came here from our joint page: Hip & Joint contains no omega-3. Its actives are glucosamine HCl, chondroitin, MSM, organic turmeric and hyaluronic acid — that is the whole list. The omega-3 benefits described above come from fish oil, not from us.
